Installing STAT*WRITER

To install the program from Windows, download the self-extracting archive.  Double click on the file icon to begin execution.  The program will unpack the archive into a temporary folder, "c:/tmp" and begin the installation process.   At the end of the installation process, a DOS window will open and will ask you to press enter to load the second installation disk.  You will get an error message indicating the software is already installed which you can ignore.  At this point you can close the DOS window and remove the temporary folder.  The software will be contained in a folder "c:/DIP30".  To execute the program, double click on a file icon called DIP30.  Press "enter" several times to pass through the logon screen and access the program which contains extensive help files.

OPENING COMMANDS TO STAT*WRITER

If the commands listed by MEO for program operation do not work, exit Windows or your shell program and go directly to the C:\> command line of DOS. (If this is not possible for you, try your own software's instructions for ways to make an icon that brings STAT*WRITER on screen).

  1. If you can get to DOS's C:\>, command a change to the directory that was established for STAT*WRITER bythe down-load/installation. The whole command should look like C:\>CD\DIP30. Press <Enter>. At this point, the prompt should change to C:\DIP30>. Follow this prompt with the typing of DIP30 (STAT*WRITER's running command) and press <Enter>.
  2. A screen titled "Agreement" should appear. Press <ENTER> six times slowly and count each press. The first <ENTER>will command a passage though the "Agreement Screen" to a blank reserved for the entry of a user's personal machine number. The second press makes the cursor disappear into a blacked-out space which accepts authorized passwords. At the third press, the legend "001 Dr. Doctor" is highlighted while the fourth <ENTER> brightens the word "OKAY". The fifth press creates a machine request to "Use Unfiled Batch?" and causes the highlighting of a line of print (a batch title) in the middle of the Batch Control screen). The sixth <ENTER> command lands the cursor on the Main Menu Bar of STAT*WRITER and highlights the first function of the "Patients" section which is "Add". Do not press <Enter>.
  3. Instead, press function key three (F3). This presents a list of files holding specific operating instructions for STAT*WRITER as keyed to each of the main functions of its Menu Bar. Read down the list for starred (*) files such as *PATIENT and *PRINT. Each one holds 1-5 pages of detailed instructions that might best be printed in the order that menu options appear on the Main Menu Bar...i.e., from your viewing left to your viewing right.
  4. The separate instruction files held under F3 are accessed by pressing the up and down arrows. Once a file that you wish to read or print has been high-lighted, press <ENTER> to select or open the file. Here again, arrow-up-down presses move the cursor through the file. Various functions such as "Save Changes", "Cancel Changes" and "Print note" are selected by pressing the TAB key which moves a high-light over them. For example, press the TAB key to highlight the command "Print Note" at the bottom of the "EDIT NOTE" rectangle (colored pink). Then, press <ENTER> to start printing the whole file.

CAUTION/CAUTION/CAUTION...F3 files have been made with free text and can be over-written at any time. If you erase or overwrite important information, replace it at once manually... or check the details of the FoxPro editor (brought on-screen by pressing ALT/E for undo/cut/copy and paste routines). Press the escape key to to exit F3 files, but if you have made typed changes you want to keep, select the "save changes" option and press <ENTER> before you exit. Exit without the "saving" will erase all the new entries made.

Pressing the F1 function key screens more Help files generically oriented to the running of any machine. Follow the same access steps above to read or print them.

NOTE: Installation under Windows NT may result in an error message of "too many files open". This error can be corrected by going to the config.sys section of the software and issuing a command to "set files=70".

DOCUMENTATION FILE FOR STAT*WRITER

OVERVIEW: STAT*WRITER integrates and supports all five major functions of electronic information processing: records making, document storage, information messaging, document retrieval and results analysis. It runs on 31,000 lines of code using the language and structure of the FoxPro relational database developed by Microsoft Corp, Redmond, WA, USA. The two program discs are executable and do not require a secondary licence from Microsoft. STAT*WRITER makes electronic records by attaching any kind of freely-typed or code-generated information to a multi-field demographic header. New program discs carry a code list or structured vocabulary already tailored to make some medical reports in English. However, any operator can add their own coded entries in any language that their machine will handle to suit their own reporting, recording and transcription needs.

STAT*WRITER installs (see directions) in a directory titled DIP30. Its screen prompt under DOS systems appears as C:\DIP30>. (More details are listed inside the program by pressing the F3 key and selecting the instruction topic titled BEGIN). The program is called up by typing DIP30 after its directory prompt and pressing <Enter>. After a few seconds, an agreement screen should appear. Then, pressing the enter key six times takes one directly into STAT*WRITER's Main Menu bar. Here, operating instructions and working tips are brought on-screen by pressing either of the Function Keys F1 or F3.
F1 has general computing explanations relating to any machine's operation such as program navigation, document editing and cursor/mouse controls. Pressing F3 delivers 21 topics specific to STAT*WRITER's operation such as the command requirements of creating a record, printing, messaging and storing that record. For example, entry of the letters USER after pressing F3 will bring up a screen explaining log-in functions. TRANS lists features of message transmission such as by computer fax, modem-to-modem techniques and automatic telephone dialing. BOOT tells of starting the program from
the very beginning. Another file brought on screen by pressing F3 is titled FUNCTION KEYS DEFINED. The pre-assigned activities for F1 through F5 and then F10 are described.
